Fred Marr giving the visitors a commentary on the spectacular bird life and fascinating history of the Bass Rock. Fred has been ferrying visitors around the islands in his boat Sula I since 1972, this was replaced by the 41 feet launch Sula II which is still in use today.
The Marr family can trace their ancestors back to the 18th century in North Berwick and are the oldest family associated with the
town. Since 1961 Fred has balanced his year round occupation as a lobster fisherman with boating visitors around the islands
during the summer months.
Throughout that time he was in daily contact with the three lighthouse keepers on the Bass, prior
to it being automated in 1988, delivering their mail, newspapers and fresh produce.
