The Marr family can trace their ancestors back to the 18th century in North Berwick and are the oldest family associated with the town. Since 1961 Fred has balanced his year round occupation as a lobster fisherman with boating visitors around the islands during the summer months.

Throughout that time he was in daily contact with the three lighthouse keepers on the Bass, prior to it being automated in 1988, delivering their mail, newspapers and fresh produce.
