In 1881, Robert Louis Stevenson returned from San Francisco with his wife and child to live in Braemar, and during the summer months rented a house in the Quadrant, North Berwick (above). It was here that the author was inspired to write his famous novel Treasure Island based on Fidra which he visited several times while his uncle's engineering company was constructing the lighthouse, completed in 1885.
